National Hugging Day

National Hugging Day is officially recognized on January 21st.  The holiday was founded by Rev. Kevin Zaborney on March 29, 1986, in Caro, Michigan. It was his hope that everyone would show more emotion in public.  Hence, Aww…remember the days of good ole PDA (public display of affection). In these challenging times, we can still celebrate national hugging day safely.  For instance, by offering hugs to our loved ones and everyone you want with masks on, by phone or virtually.

There are mental and physical health benefits associated with hugging and touching.  Since, hugging, rubbing and cuddling improves sleep and releases oxytocin, give or get one at least three times a day.  Oxytocin is associated with empathy, trust, sexual activity, and relationship-building. Known as the “Love Hormone”, it provides tremendous health benefits such as pain reduction. When you receive hugs, it helps reduce stress, lowers blood pressure, and lowers the risk of heart disease. Naturally, it also eases anxiety and improves sleep.

Reach out

Give someone in your inner circle a big hug today. Or, if you need one, ask for a hug and reap the benefits. Realizing we are living in COVID times, practice social distancing by giving mental hugs. Let someone know you care by sending warm, cheerful words of encouragement. Reach out to an acquaintance, coworker or loved ones. Boost their joy and spirit. Let them know how much they mean to you with a verbal or virtual hug until you can give them the real thing!

Additionally, kind words and gestures go a long way and mean more than you know.  On account when physical interaction is limited.    Many people are alone, isolated and have limited contact with others. even family. Remember to reach out! Remember to show love and kindness!

We All Need Love, Affection and Most of all a Hug From Time To Time!
